Suturday 13/6 Retrospective of the events that took place on the day of the demonstration against the burning of garbage and against the creation of an SRF production plant
Gathering of people at the central hospital of Volos, Polimeri street 18:00-19:00
13-6-2020 thousands of citizens and collectives from Volos and the rest of Greece (Athens, Thessaloniki, Larissa, Karditsa) gathered at Volos Hospital and despite the systematic concealment of the mobilization by the local media, they framed the calls and participated with a pulse in the rally against the burning of garbage by AGET-Lafarge and against the creation of an SRF factory by the Municipality of Volos. The thousands gathered marched towards AGET. People of all ages, (families, children, elderly people) anti-combustion slogans composed the silent climate of the demonstration.
19:20_ The crowd of citizens arriving at AGET dynamically passed the door of the factory and tried to place symbolic banners. Then they receive the first attack with micro-complexes and flash grenades. Most of the crowd gathered was intercepted but remained in the area opposite the factory shouting slogans and staging a microphone protest.
Greetings were addressed by all the collectives of Volos that fight against the burning of garbage, as well as collectives from Halkidiki, Thessaloniki, Agrafa and other areas fighting for the environment. The climate remains mild with poems, slogans and verses. People symbolically hang the banner to the left of the factory entrance and begin to leave
20:52_Then begins the second attack by the forces with use of chemicals to the crowd. The police on both sides push people into the street and the small beach near the factory where they are trapped. Children, students, elderly people, drown in tear gas in a stifling climate of panic. There are savage beatings and fainting, as in addition to the chemicals, the police hunt without exception whoever they find in front of them. At this point some people are arrested and beaten. The people who were trying to help the excluded, with dozens ending up in the hospital and twelve being brought in by the police.
People disoriented and embarrassed take the road to Volos. A little further down the road, security men in conventional cars arrest unsuspecting people. Third unprovoked attack by the police and even just outside the city hospital. Police, after flying flash grenades, start chasing people endlessly on the street.
People are regrouping at the university of the dome and over a hundred people decide to go peacefully outside the Magnesia Police Directorate asking that the accused be released and report the incidents of police violence, but the officers at the gate said they are instructed on this day not to accept complaints! The climate calm enough with the police having their helmets removed.
Then at the behest of the police director of Magnesia on the pretext that the crowd was blocking the entrance of the station, the people who were waiting were repelled and hit by the MAT units without any reason. Unprovoked people who were just standing outside the building were unprovoked. The chase reached the camp of Volos, accompanied by tear gas and flash bombs. Along side with repelling the protesters. Characteristic is the incident where a passing resident of the area was verbally and physically attacked passing outside the precinct. More specifically, a police officer who recorded his features broke his shield on the man's body. They tore his clothes off while the old man kept asking what was going on. Those who witnessed this incident were also struck. The police director refused to give the details of the specific policeman who had come from the city of Thessaloniki at the request of the bystanders, proposing to make a written request. No people were arrested in the incident in front of the Police Directorate, but were blindly beaten as a result of two other people ending up in hospital. Five of the seven defendants who had remained at the station until that time were released, while the way of arresting the two citizens, who were indicted, was typical. The two arrested as they ran to their rescue after tear gas fired at the rally were struck by the MATs, the girl got away and recorded on video hitting the second arrested.
However, police arbitrariness did not stop there as the next day , where crowds of people gathered outside the courts to show solidarity with those arrested, another chemical attack took place in Freedom Square after a young citizen had been brutally beaten. The young man was savagely beaten in front of passers-by in the centre of Volos and taken to the Magnesia Police Directorate. Inside the car that was carrying him, according to his father's testimony , the officers kept hitting and cursing at him. The wood continued in the police directorate building, as did the profanity. He was hit mercilessly by breaking his ribs to the point where the young man shouted "I can't breathe." And culminating in the violence, the police officers subjected him to torture. When he asked for water, they drove him to a freezer and gave it a drop. In the end, he was released so he wouldn't be taken to the hospital because he was in need of immediate medical attention. Doctors are monitoring his condition so that the broken bones do not touch vital organs.
